Growing Up

students greening Taylor roof

SLC created a “green roof” on Taylor residence hall in October. The 1,000-square-foot system of succulent plants, which grow in modular trays, will help reduce heating bills, control storm water runoff, and reduce urban heat-island effect. “Green-collar” workers from Sustainable South Bronx installed the roof; the project was initiated by the student club Sustainable SLC and funded by the student senate. This is the second green roof on campus: the first covers a section of the LEED–certified Heimbold Visual Arts Center, which opened in 2004.
