Spring 2008 Concert Series
Modern and classical, instrumental and vocal, theory and performance...Sarah Lawrence College invites you to celebrate music as you celebrate spring. Please join us for one or all of this season’s concerts on our campus in Westchester County.
Cost: Except as noted, all events are $10; $8 seniors and non-SLC students.
All performances take place in Reisinger Concert Hall on the Sarah Lawrence campus in Bronxville, NY.
American Modern Ensemble: 1938*
Tuesday, February 5, 1:30 p.m.
The American Modern Ensemble will celebrate the 70th birthdays of six of America's greatest composers.
John Storyk, Registered Architect and Acoustician*
Tuesday, February 12, 1:30 p.m. FREE
Architecture and Acoustics of Critical Listening and Audio Production Environments
Storyk’s lecture will address sound and architecture as well as construction techniques as they apply to building recording studios. The discussion will include both theory and photos of actual studio projects.
Anti-Social Music
Wednesday, February 20, 7 p.m.
This concert will feature genre-confused pieces by Pat Muchmore, Andrea La Rose, and William Brittelle -- including Brittelle's Mohair Time Warp for lip-synched vocals and amplified ensemble.
The M6: Meredith Monk Music Third Generation
Wednesday, March 5, 7 p.m.
This six-member ensemble performs an all-Monk program including Tablet (for three voices, piano, and recorders); virtuosic duets from Facing North; and Dolmen Music, one of Monk’s rarely performed though most celebrated works.
Quartet: The Music of Messiaen and Bartok*
Tuesday, March 11, 1:30 p.m.
Igor Begelman, clarinet, Calvin Weirsma, violin, Susannah Chapman, cello, and Jean Wentworth, piano, will perform Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and Bartok’s Contrasts.
A Perfect Pairing: Oboe and Piano*
Tuesday, April 1, 1:30 p.m.
Nick Daniels, oboe, and Carsten Schmidt, piano, will combine talents and instruments in this performance – bringing out the best in both.
Manhattan String Quartet*
Tuesday, April 8, 1:30 p.m.
Continuing its Beethoven String Quartet cycle at Sarah Lawrence, the Manhattan String Quartet performs the master's Opus 18, No. 5; Opus 95 “Serioso”; and Opus 127 in this program.
Piano Four Hands: Works of Louis Moreau Gottschalk
Sunday, April 20, 4 p.m.
Jean and Kenneth Wentworth present an afternoon of music by America’s first superstar pianist. The concert will feature both original compositions such as Souvenirs d’Andalousie and operatic transcriptions by Donizetti and Verdi.
Sarah Lawrence Orchestra
Tuesday, April 29, 8 p.m. FREE
The Sarah Lawrence Orchestra performs works of the 18th through 21st centuries, by both celebrated and lesser-known composers.
Cygnus Ensemble

The ensemble-in-residence performs both contemporary compositions and SLC student works.
