Leadership in the Arts:
Bank Street College of Education and Sarah Lawrence College Graduate Writing Program
Bank Street College of Education and the Sarah Lawrence College Graduate Writing Program have collaborated to offer a three-summer graduate degree program in Leadership in the Arts, which leads to a Masters of Science in Education. This program is designed to meet the needs of educators and has two principal components: the leadership portion provides the knowledge and skills needed for the role of supervisor and administrator in diverse school and community settings, the workshop portion helps students refine and develop writing skills.
For three summers, educators draw on the extensive resources of Sarah Lawrence College's Graduate Writing Program through intensive courses in writing. Participants refine and expand their knowledge of writing in close collaboration with faculty members who are active, successful writers. The program focuses on the art and craft of writing, rather than the study of literature. The workshop portion of the program complements coursework in administration and supervision at Bank Street College of Education during the summer and in a distance learning model in their own classroom or school site throughout the academic year.
For those students who have been teaching for at least three years in nursery through 12th grades, the program leads to New York State certification in supervision and administration. Those with provisional certification in art education may apply for permanent certification in art education. Graduates of this program hold positions as public and private school principals, regional art supervisors and administrators, and teachers, as well as professional artists and designers.
