Multicultural Affairs
x2660—Westlands, second floor
Students at Sarah Lawrence College come from diverse locations, representing nearly every state in the U.S. as well as 20 other countries. Students may obtain practical advice, counseling, and assistance from the Office of Multicultural and International Affairs (OMIA), which works to incorporate an understanding of, and appreciation for, diversity into life and instruction at the College.
The OMIA addresses issues of race, class, culture, and gender, in and out of the classroom, giving the College community an opportunity to become intellectually involved through a dynamic interaction among distinguished guests, faculty, and students. A program of visiting scholars, speakers, and artists drawn from the political, academic, and social arenas brings to the campus community a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives, and insights. Sometimes our visitors give lectures or performances; sometimes they engage in small group discussions or conduct master classes.
The OMIA also works closely with on-campus student groups to improve inter-group communications at the College, and helps to establish common ground for more fruitful dialogue regarding multicultural issues. Additionally, the OMIA works with faculty in planning programs to enhance students’ understanding of issues growing out of classroom discussion.
