Health Services

x2349 & x2350—Lyles House

Health Services is staffed and equipped to provide both medical and mental health care for Sarah Lawrence students.

Medical Services: The medical staff consists of licensed family nurse practitioners and nurses who are able to provide basic medical and gynecological care. In addition, a physician who specializes in internal medicine is available weekly to treat students at Health Services. A licensed OB/GYN and orthopedic specialist provide on- and off-site consultation and evaluation. When necessary, off-campus referrals to other specialists are also provided.

Mental Health Services: The mental health staff consists of licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical social workers who provide psychological evaluation, individual and group psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology services. All services provided are confidential, and every effort is made to ensure privacy.

Hours of Operation/After Hours Care: Health Services is open weekdays when the College is in session, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Health Services can be reached during hours of operation by dialing extension x2349 or x2350.When Health Services is closed, emergency care can be obtained by calling the College emergency number at x2222. A Health Services physician is on call to assist students with any after-hours emergency needs. Parents of students will be notified in case of a serious emergency or when a student is taken to the hospital due to the use of alcohol or other drugs. Otherwise, students are responsible for notifying parents or guardians about any personal health problems.

Fees: There is no charge for any of the regular services provided by Health Services staff. It is Sarah Lawrence College policy to provide care for students’ acute, episodic, or short-term illnesses. However, continuous or long-term medical or psychiatric care, including extensive diagnostic or evaluative procedures may require the services of an outside private practitioner. The staff at Health Services will be glad to make a referral to a qualified local practitioner if continued treatment is needed.

Insurance: The College requires each student to be covered by sickness and accident insurance. The annual premium for the College’s program will be included on the summer bill. The College insurance can be waived only if the College receives a written statement demonstrating equivalent insurance coverage for the student. Although many families have some form of insurance, it’s important to ensure that students are adequately covered while attending school. All too often situations arise where a student requires medical or mental health care beyond what is available at the SLC Health Center, only to discover that their insurance covers them only in the event of an emergency or in their home geographic region. A detailed brochure about the College’s insurance program is available to each student and may be obtained through Health Services.

Laboratory tests at Health Services will be billed to the student who can, in turn, submit the bills to her/his insurance company. The cost of medications is partially covered by the College insurance plan, but the copayment must be made by the student at the time medications are provided. The most commonly prescribed medications are usually available at Health Services at reduced prices.

We recommend that students with physical or mental health problems consult with Health Services before seeking outside treatment. Health Services is able to facilitate referrals to qualified local practitioners. For students with the Sarah Lawrence College Health Insurance, a referral is generally required before an insurance claim can be submitted for reimbursement.

Any illness that requires absence from the College should be reported immediately to Health Services. Absence from class because of illness should be reported by the student directly to the class professor.

Appointments: For medical or mental health care not related to immediate illness or emergency, appointments should be made in advance by calling the Health Services appointment desk at x2350 or x2349. Urgent or emergency care can be provided on an as-needed basis. To accommodate student health needs that arise without advance warning, Health Services offers daily walk-in hours. Medical walk-in hours are available daily from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Mental Health walk-in hours are posted each semester.

Health Education: A range of health educational programs are offered by Health Services to the SLC community on a variety of topics and issues, including drugs and alcohol, eating disorders, stress management, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV testing. Students interested in obtaining information should contact Health Services at x2350.
