The Health Food Bar features a menu which is “as organic as possible,” and its products are purchased from local vendors whenever possible. The Health Food Bar is open from noon to 2:30 p.m. and from 5 to 7:45 p.m., Monday through Thursday. On Friday, the Health Food Bar has the same lunch hours but closes for dinner at 6:30 p.m. Most foods are purchased from health food sources and are prepared on an individual basis with special emphasis given to the needs of vegans and vegetarians. Food is sold on a per item cash basis, and meal plans are accepted up to the monetary value of the meal plan for that meal period.
The Faculty/Staff Dining Room is maintained exclusively for the lunchtime use of faculty, staff, and College guests. Students are allowed to use this room for lunch only in the company of a member of the faculty or staff. The Siegel Center, a convenient spot for socializing and short-order food items, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 4 a.m., Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 a.m., Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday. The College reserves the right to alter facilities and operating hours during the academic year if necessary. Students on meal plans must use their SLC ID to gain access to dining facilities. Entrance will be denied to those without ID. If an ID is misplaced or lost, a 24-hour meal/ID card is available from the Bates Food Service Office. If your card is lost, the ID must be replaced and validated in the Duplicating Office, located in the North Building.
At each facility, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are assigned a specific monetary value (announced over the summer and available upon arrival in the fall), which entitles the student to full fare (including seconds) in Bates Dining Room. If the student chooses to eat a meal in the Siegel Center, the Health Food Bar, or the Atrium Café, the preset values are applicable to all purchases. If such selection in these à la carte facilities exceeds the preset values, the student pays the difference in cash, FLIK CA$H, or debit cash, but does not receive a refund if the selection totals less than the preset values. Plans 2A, 3, and 4 also have FLIK CA$H, which can be used at any time.
Meal Plan Description
Meal plans begin every Friday at breakfast and run through Thursday dinner. Meal plans are reset every Thursday at 2 a.m. If students have unused meals by Thursday of each week, these meals are NOT carried over into the next week. Each meal plan is calculated with an average missed meal factor. FLIK CA$H comes with some of the meal plan options (see list below for details). FLIK CA$H is accepted like cash in all our dining locations. FLIK CA$H DOES NOT carry over from semester to semester and is non-refundable. If your FLIK CA$H runs low, you may add additional debit cash at any time by going to the Campus Facilities Office in Andrews or by calling (914) 395-2385.
Plan Options
- Meal Plan 1: 19 meals per week
- Meal Plan 2: 14 meals per week
- Meal Plan 2-A: 10 meals per week and $300 FLIK CA$H
- Meal Plan 3: 7 meals per week and $100 FLIK CA$H
- Meal Plan 4: 3 meals per week and $100 FLIK CA$H
Meal plans can be changed within the first six weeks of each semester. Please note that you are subject to a penalty fee for changing meal plans during the first six weeks—see Meal Plan Changes.
Meal Plan Changes
If a student withdraws from the College or cancels a meal plan during the semester, a percentage of the semester cost is credited based on the following schedule of notice:
- Within the first week: 90% of the semester cost
- Within the second week: 80% of the semester cost
- Within the third week: 60% of the semester cost
- Within the fourth week: 40% of the semester cost
- Within the fifth week: 20% of the semester cost
- After the fifth week: 10% of the semester cost
If a student changes to a lesser meal plan, a reduced fee will be charged based on the percentage schedule above, applied to the difference between the greater and lesser meal plan. A student wishing to change to a greater meal plan will be charged the difference between the meal plan costs based on the calculated remainder of the semester. In addition, a student changing a meal plan or canceling a meal plan subsequent to remitting the full semester bill will be charged a $25 change fee. First-year students may not make changes in their meal plans that would result in dropping below the Plan 2 minimum. Exceptions are granted for medical reasons only, and specific documentation from a physician is required. Requests and documentation should be directed to Health Services.
