The Office of Career Counseling offers a broad range of career services to students and alumnae/i that empower you to explore, define, and realize your career goals.The office is a student-centered support service: offering one-on-one counseling; consultations with students throughout the career planning process; and assistance with goal-setting and goal achievement through a variety of career exploration activities. Current students may also connect with Sarah Lawrence alumnae/i who can share their professional knowledge and experiences.The lifetime tools and skills provided are essential for career development, job search training, and the achievement of career satisfaction.

Programs and Services

Individual Career Counseling: The office schedules appointments and offers walk-in hours for students and alumnae/i seeking assistance in defining and planning their career goals, and learning internship and employment search strategies. Phone appointments are also available.

Mock Interviews: Videotaped practice interviews help students and alumnae/i practice interviewing skills. They receive valuable feedback on their interviewing strengths and weaknesses, as well as recommendations for improvement.

Workshops: Career-related topics are presented in workshops on campus throughout the year. Sessions are open to all students and alumnae/i.

Monstertrak: An online job posting system, Monstertrak.com permits instant access to full-time, part-time, internship, volunteer, and summer job opportunities. Students and alumnae/i are encouraged to register and obtain the Sarah Lawrence College password through the Office of Career Counseling.

Recruiting Consortiums: The Office of Career Counseling is a member of four consortia.

  • Innovative Opportunities Network (ION) offers internship opportunities across the nation.
  • Fall Recruiting Consortium (FRC) offers job interviews for seniors in New York City each fall semester.
  • Career and Internship Consortium (CIC) offers job and internship interviews in New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., each spring semester.
  • Venture Program offers an excellent option for students taking a leave of absence.

Internship Program: An internship is an on-site learning experience in a work setting related to your personal, academic, or career interests. Placements exist in every job field from art to zoology. Visit www.monstertrak.com and enter our school password for access to these listings. In addition, the Internship Directory is available at the beginning of each semester and provides a sampling of the many offerings.

Information Sessions: Employers, nonprofits, and governmental organizations, as well as representatives from graduate and professional schools, visit campus to provide information to students regarding career and internship opportunities and degree programs.

Alumnae/i Networking Panels: In collaboration with the Office of Alumnae/i Relations, the Office of Career Counseling offers networking panels where students gain career information and guidance from alumnae/i representing various career fields.

Employer Site Visits: Students have the opportunity to visit employers, where they can gain valuable insight into a career field of interest.The schedule for each visit includes the employer’s overview of the organization, information about career and internship opportunities, a tour of the workplace, and a chance to network onsite with professionals.

Credential File Service: Set up a credential file in the Office of Career Counseling to contain letters of recommendation, transcripts, writing samples, etc.

Graduate/Professional School Advisement: Career Counseling can provide information about graduate and professional schools, as well as guidance and support through the application process. Pre-law advisement includes individual counseling and group meetings with programming that focuses on the law school admissions process and the field of law in general.

Online Career Assessments: Tools such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality assessment, Self- Directed Search Interest Inventory, and Strong Interest Inventory are available online, via links posted on our Web site. Students and alumnae/i are encouraged to take these assessments to assist them with clarifying their career goals and interests.

* In addition to the services listed above, there are many offerings for graduate students related to their specific needs.

Resources and Publications

Visit the Office of Career Counseling Web site to view additional information regarding programs and services, calendar of events, sample resumes, cover letters, CVs, links to online resources, and more.There are many subscription links that are password-protected; the list of passwords is available on request.

Career News, a monthly newsletter, is the office’s main vehicle for communicating a wealth of information to students. Writing and reporting opportunities for the newsletter are available to students; the publication also spotlights cutting-edge information regarding a wide variety of career possibilities and the changing job market.

The Career Resource Library, located in the office, offers a comprehensive collection of books, newspapers, magazines, and online resources.The library is a rich source of information regarding career options,working abroad, graduate schools, and the transition to life after SLC.

The daily e-mail announces career events.
