Welcome to the Office of Residence Life
The conversations that change your life are not only going to take place around a seminar table. They will also happen with your roommates and friends in a hallway, on a lawn, and over a cup of tea. At Sarah Lawrence College, our commitment to learning does not stop at the classroom door. It reaches to every corner of campus—particularly the residence halls.
The Office of Residence Life is committed to providing a residential experience that enhances academic achievement and promotes personal development, with particular emphasis on individual responsibility within a community setting. In other words, along with becoming fabulous writers, scientists, dancers, teachers, etc.—our students are also becoming good neighbors.
Life in a residence hall is not always comfortable or easy. Students often experience interpersonal tension, value conflicts, and other challenges. Learning how to respond maturely, responsibly, and creatively is a powerful educational experience. Residence Life staff members (ranging from Resident Advisors to the Director of Residence Life) help students learn from the challenges and opportunities presented by life in the residence halls.
The residence halls at Sarah Lawrence are as diversified as the students who live within them. Each building takes on a character of its own. This can be seen not only in the diversity of their architecture, but also in the stories and experiences shared within them. You will become a part of a community unlike any you have ever experienced before. While you are here, you will hear your residence called everything from a suite to a floor to a house to a building. Our hope is that you will be comfortable enough in your surroundings after a while to call where you live your home!
