Career Planning Step 6: Prepare for Graduate or Professional School

Interested in pursuing your education beyond Sarah Lawrence? Let us help you find the right path and the right school.

Applying to graduate school or law school can be an intimidating process. But it can also be a wonderful occasion for reflecting on your college experience, assessing your skills, clarifying your values, and sharpening your goals. This step is designed to help you make informed choices that are rooted in who you are and what you really want from life.

The greatest resource available to you on campus, first, is the faculty. Talk to your teachers about your plans and seek their advice. They have come to know how you think, how you work, and how you write. They also know a lot about various graduate programs around the country.

Take advantage, too, of the resources in the Office of Career Counseling. We have guides to graduate programs, university catalogs, standardized test application forms, and information about financing graduate education. We also have professional counselors who can help you plan what your next step should be after Sarah Lawrence.

We invite you to review the Graduate School Guide and Law School Guide to answer your preliminary questions and begin the process of exploring an advanced degree.

The scholarships and grants included in our Competitive Fellowships, Scholarships, and Grant Opportunities Booklet are major sources of funding for both undergraduate and graduate studies. For more information on scholarship, fellowship, and grant opportunities contact the Dean of Studies Office.

Students interested in Law School should note: Before making an appointment with the Director of Career Counseling and Pre-Law Advisor, Angela Cherubini, please complete the Pre-Law Student Information Sheet and submit it with your resume to acherubini@sarahlawrence.edu.

Students interested in Medical School should contact the Pre-Health Advisor, Judy Levine, at jklcareer@aol.com.

Next Step

Now that you’ve explored graduate and professional schools, you’re ready for Step 7: Entering the Workplace.

Thoughts on the Matter

Jeamme Chia“I felt that the workshop was informative about the different routes to medical school. We had the chance to meet Judy LeVine, who is the pre-health adviser, Angela from Career Counseling, and Irene from Community Partnerships. The networking was particularly important. On a whole, the event gave me a greater insight into the world of pre-health (yes, it's a world on its own!) and what it would mean to be a pre-medical student.” –Jeamme Chia ‘13 on the Careers in Healthcare Workshop
