How Parents Enrich Life at SLC
Every year, parents of students surprise us with the limitless ways they contribute to student life at Sarah Lawrence. As always, we are appreciative of the lengths that parents go to to enhance the overall Sarah Lawrence experience for their children and the entire student body.
In the spring, we recognize the spirited efforts of parent ambassadors, who attend welcome receptions for new and admitted students. Across the country—from Boston to Seattle, from Los Angeles to the Washington, DC metro area—current parents volunteer their time to be a resource for families. Participating in these events, the Office of Parent Programs hears from the parents of new and incoming students, who are especially grateful for the invaluable parent perspective, which includes practical advice about attending the College and overall reassurance as families prepare to step into the unknown: college life.
A number of current parents have generously contacted the Office of Career Counseling with leads on potential internship opportunities for students. As you know, internships offer students a critical advantage in this challenging job market—and, as such, are more important than ever. If you have ideas, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
Finally, parents continue to provide robust support of The Fund for Sarah Lawrence. Chaired by Carol and Frank Riddick, the Parents Fund has an immediate, tangible impact on campus life, by facilitating a range of opportunities, including improved classroom facilities, and student scholarships for those most in need. To date, parents and family members have contributed an impressive $460,000 to the Parents Fund, toward our goal of $500,000 from families, which we hope to reach by May 31. Your support of the Parents Fund is such a wonderful testament to your experiences with and belief in the mission of the College. As ever, we are so grateful!
As you can see, there are a number of ways to make a difference for students. In our experience, parents of Sarah Lawrence students are equally as creative and dynamic as their children—so if you have new ideas on ways to get involved, or would like to join one of the aforementioned efforts, please call or e-mail Elise Schramm, Director of Parent Programs, at (914) 395-2536 or eschramm@sarahlawrence.edu.
