Health Services
Located in Lyles House, Health Services is staffed to render basic medical and gynecological care, as well as psychiatric and psychological consultation and treatment. Medical staff consists of licensed family nurse practitioners and nurses. In addition, a physician who specializes in internal medicine is available weekly to treat students at Health Services. A licensed OB/GYN and orthopedic specialist provide on- and off-site consultation and evaluation. When necessary, off-campus referrals to other specialists are also provided. Mental health staff consists of licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and post-doctoral psychology fellows who provide psychological evaluation, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacological services. All services provided are confidential, and every effort is made to ensure privacy. Health Services is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the College is in session. The telephone numbers are (914) 395-2349 and (914) 395-2350. When Health Services is closed, emergency care can be obtained by calling the emergency number, (914) 395-2222. Parents are notified in case of a serious emergency and when students are taken to the hospital due to the use of alcohol or other drugs. Otherwise, students are responsible for notifying parents or guardians about any personal health problems. There is no charge for any of the regular services of the Health Services staff. It is College policy to provide for the care of students’ acute, episodic, or short-term illnesses, but not to give continuous or long-term medical or psychiatric care, nor to provide for extensive diagnostic or evaluative procedures. The latter require the services of a private practitioner or clinic, and the staff at Health Services will be glad to make a referral if that is necessary or desired.
The College requires each student to be covered by Sickness and Accident Insurance. The annual premium for the College’s program will be included on the summer bill. The College insurance can be waived only if the College receives a written statement demonstrating equivalent insurance coverage for the student and a copy of their current insurance card is submitted. A detailed brochure about the College’s insurance program is available to each student.
Laboratory tests at Health Services will be billed to the student, who can in turn submit them to his or her insurance company. The cost of medications is partially covered by the College insurance plan, but the copayment must be made by the student at the time the medications are provided. The most commonly prescribed medications are often available at Health Services at reduced prices.
It is important that students with physical or mental health problems consult with Health Services first. This will ensure that those with the College insurance receive any reimbursement to which they are entitled.A diagnostic visit to a specialist is partially covered by the College insurance plan, provided the student is referred to the specialist by the Health Services staff.
Illness requiring absence from the College should be reported immediately to Health Services. Absence from class because of illness should be reported by the student directly to the faculty member. While urgent or emergency care can be provided on a drop-in basis, students are asked to make an appointment before coming in, even if it means calling in the morning to make an appointment for that afternoon. Medical and mental health walk-in hours are available daily. For care not related to immediate illness or emergency, appointments should be made in advance.
