Policy Statements
Sarah Lawrence College employees and employers adhere to the following policies:
Equal Opportunity
Sarah Lawrence College admits students and selects employees regardless of race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, disability, national and ethnic origin and thereafter accords them all the rights and privileges generally made available to students and employees at the college. The College is strongly committed to basing judgment about individuals solely upon their qualifications and abilities and to protecting individual rights of privacy, association, belief, and expression.
Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment in an academic setting is behavior that calls attention to the sexuality or sexual identity of any person in a manner that unreasonably prevents or impairs that person's full enjoyment of educational or occupational benefits and opportunities. Any oral, written or physical conduct of a sexual nature that is used as the basis for employment decisions or made a condition, explicitly or implicitly, of employment constitutes harassment. In a work situation, sexual harassment is behavior that interferes with an individual's work performance or creates a hostile or offensive work environment.
Sarah Lawrence College does not tolerate sexual harassment and complaints will be dealt with promptly. Students who feel that they are being or have been sexually harassed by members of the staff should consult the Director of Human Resources; complaints about faculty should be directed to the Dean of the College.
Smoking
New York State's Clean Indoor Air Act prohibits or restricts smoking in most buildings on college campuses. Sarah Lawrence College makes all reasonable efforts to enforce the Clean Indoor Air Act in accordance with the policies outlined in the Student Handbook.
Drugs and Alcohol
The Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 requires that the college, as a recipient of federal grants, maintains a drug-free workplace, and informs all employees of its policy. The use of drugs that impair a person's ability to perform his or her job responsibilities is prohibited. Any employee who violates this policy will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.
