How to Help a Friend
- Be a good listener. Ask your friend what they need.
- Do not force your friend to take action; they may not be ready. Encourage your friend to seek medical attention and emotional support.
- Provide information about available confidential resources and encourage and assist them in getting the help they want. This may mean providing phone numbers, information, transportation or shelter.
- Let your friend know that you are available to talk.
- Provide assurance and support. Do not judge your friend or their actions. Assure your friend that it was not their fault; your friend did the best they could given the circumstances.
- Take care of yourself. It can be emotionally trying and difficult to support a friend who is going through such a horrible experience. Be sure and take care of yourself by finding your own support. Health Services Mental Health staff are also available to assist you and they can be reached by calling 914-395-2350 or ext. 2350.
