Career Planning: Steps to Success

Step 1: Self-Assess

Are you unsure of where to begin? The first step in the career planning process is to take inventory of your personality, interests, values, and skills using self-assessments.

Step 2: Explore and Research Careers

Once you've narrowed your career search options, it's time to research a particular industry or occupation.

Step 3: Prepare Application Materials

The way you present yourself may make the difference between getting lost in the shuffle and finding success.

Step 4: Gain Experience Through Internships

Approximately one-third of all Sarah Lawrence students participate in the Internship Program during their four years. Why? Sarah Lawrence students have the unique advantage of being a short train ride away from NYC and the greater Tri-State area, which allows for unmatchable internship opportunities.

Step 5: Learn to Ace the Interview

While your resume makes a first impression, the interview leaves a lasting impression.

Step 6: Prepare for Graduate or Professional School

Interested in pursuing your education beyond Sarah Lawrence? Let us help you find the right path and the right school.

Step 7: Entering the Workplace

Anxious about transitioning from college to career? Finding an exciting, fulfilling, and challenging job that will start you on the road to a successful and happy career is your goal. It is important to be realistic, while keeping your enthusiasm.

Career Link

Students have access to CareerLink, our internship and job database, featuring over a thousand listings, including internships, jobs, fellowships, and volunteer opportunities as well as listings via the NaceLink network (a national job search database) and internships across the country via NIC (Nationwide Internships Consortium). If you need assistance with logging in or navigating CareerLink, please contact the Office of Career Counseling for assistance.
