The following classifications apply to employees who are on the College payroll, including contractual regular and guest faculty, administrators and support staff members. Employees fall into the following categories and are eligible for benefits according to their classification:
- Exempt And Non-Exempt Employees:
In addition to the categories outlined below, all employees are classified by Federal law as either exempt or non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Exempt employees are occasionally referred to as Faculty or Administrative Employees and non-exempt employees may be referred to as Staff Members.
In general, exempt employees are contractual regular and guest faculty, and administrators whose responsibilities include a predominant amount of executive, managerial or administrative duties, or whose positions require an advanced educational degree or scientific or specialized study in a specific professional field (e.g., legal, medical, scientific). Non-exempt employees are those who perform support functions (office staff, technical and service employees), who do not meet the exemption provisions of the Act.
- Full-Time Employees:
Those working 35 hours or more a week, on a 10- to 12-month basis and contractual regular and guest faculty who teach 4 days per week. Upon completion of the various required waiting periods, these employees are eligible for benefits described in this section of the web site.
- Regular Part-Time Employees:
Those working 21 hours or more each week but less than 35 hours for at least nine months per year plus contractual regular and guest faculty who teach at least 2 days per week. (In determining the hours worked, it should be noted that the one-hour lunch period for office staff members is not considered part of the working day.) Upon completion of the various required waiting periods, regular part-time employees are eligible for benefits described in this section.
- Temporary Employees:
Those who are hired for a specified period of time, usually less than a fiscal year. Regardless of the number of hours worked, these employees are eligible only for statutory benefits.
- Casual Employees:
Those who work irregularly, on an "on-call" basis, or regularly but less than 21 hours each week. These employees are eligible only for statutory benefits. Casual employees who work regularly but less than 21 hours per week will be paid for holidays during which the College is closed and that fall on their regularly scheduled workdays. They will not be paid for holidays during which the College is open or which fall on days they do not normally work.
- Student Employees:
Those who are undergraduate, graduate or special students at Sarah Lawrence College and are employed in a student-designated job during the academic year or over the summer months. Student employees are eligible only for statutory benefits.
- Change Of Category:
Temporary and casual employees who become full-time or regular part-time employees will become eligible for benefits upon completion of the various required waiting periods in their new category. Service in a temporary or casual category does not count toward completion of the required waiting periods for any benefit.
Full-time and regular part-time employees who change to the temporary or casual category will lose their eligibility for all but statutory benefits. They may, however, convert their medical insurance coverages to direct-payment memberships for a specific time in accordance with COBRA, or to non-group memberships in accordance with the conversion policies of the various insurance plans.
- Active Employees:
An employee is actively employed if he or she is performing his or her occupation for wages at the normal place of work. An employee who is removed from the payroll for the summer months, but who holds an oral or written appointment for the fall, is considered actively employed for the purposes of Medical, Life and Long Term Disability insurance only, not for the purposes of New York State Disability, or certain other benefits.
