If your employment with the College terminates (other than for retirement at age 65 or older), you may continue participation in the medical plans for up to 18 months at your own expense under Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 (COBRA) regulations. New York State regulations extend the 18 months to 36 months. For a one year period during 2009 the federal government is subsidizing the COBRA payment by up to 65 percent under limited circumstances.
Dependents of active covered employees who lose coverage (i.e., due to divorce, death of a spouse, or age restrictions) may continue membership in the plan for up to 36 months at their own expense.
