Scholarships & Grants
“How do I pay for school?”
As the price of higher education mounts, financial aid is becoming more crucial for those who may not be able to afford to attend college otherwise. Students often look to outside sources to supplement financial aid packages offered by their college. There are many scholarships and grants based on need and/or merit.
The scholarships and grants included in our Competitive Fellowships, Scholarships, and Grant Opportunities Booklet are major sources of funding for both undergraduate and graduate studies. Most are merit-based with special attention to need. If you’re looking for funds to support your studies here at Sarah Lawrence, visit the Office of Career Counseling and look through the scholarship books. Both private and public sector grants are available.
Some general tips:
- Plan ahead. If you know you’ll need money for graduate school, start looking. You’ll find more resources, and have a less stressful time.
- Find the scholarship or grant that best fits your needs – and don’t be afraid to apply even if it is highly competitive.
- Contact the appropriate persons - either faculty or administrators at Sarah Lawrence - for more information about a particular scholarship or grant.
- Oftentimes, a student needs to be nominated for a scholarship. Don’t let this discourage you. Express your interest in a scholarship for which you think you qualify.
- Carefully fill out the application. According to the Association of Fund Raising Council, more than 80% of the grant applications that went to 23,000 foundations in the U.S. were misdirected or filled out improperly
