Form and Style
The length of a vita is determined by the content; the more experience one has, the longer the vita is likely to be. In academia, it is acceptable for those with master's degrees to have a three- or four-page vita. Remember that good vitae are summaries and should be as concise as possible. Use consistent grammar, style and formatting throughout. All vitae should be professionally word-processed.
Follow these basic rules for best results:
- Writing Style: Use short phrases; consistent grammar; succinct action words.
- Page Layout: Set margins at 1”- 1 1/2.” Put your name and page number on each page (page number is not necessary on first page). Put headings in all caps or bold face. Use 12 point type and a single, classic type font.
- Paper: Use 8 1/2” x 11” stationery-quality bond in white, cream or gray.
- Printing: Laser print originals in black ink, or make high quality photocopies from the laser printed original on bond paper.
- Proofreading: Have a trusted friend carefully proofread your vita for grammar and spelling errors, and style and format inconsistencies.
