Judith Babbitts named Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies

Judith Babbitts has been named the new dean of Graduate and Professional Studies at Sarah Lawrence College. Previously, she served as vice dean for Advanced Academic Programs in the Zanyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and as academic dean of the International Honors Program/World Learning in Boston, Massachusetts.

Babbitts, who holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University, a Master of Arts in Women’s History from Sarah Lawrence College, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Rutgers University, has extensive experience with curricular development in graduate education and special programs, and online learning.  Additionally, she has significant experience in international education and has developed and taught courses in Asian, American, and Women’s History, both in the United States and abroad.

Babbitts follows long-time dean, Susan Guma, who is retiring after 30 years of dedicated service to the College. “After an extensive search we are delighted to have found a candidate who we are confident will build on the work of Dean Guma and the faculty and staff in our graduate and special programs,” said President Karen Lawrence in announcing Babbits’ appointment.
