Free river programs for families at the Center for the Urban River at Beczak

“River Explorers,” an exciting schedule of free weekend programs for children and their families at the Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB), begins April 19 and extends through the fall.

“These programs show the public, even our youngest visitors, that the Hudson River is part of a complex ecosystem that nurtures an amazing diversity of living things, including people,” says Vicky Garufi, director of education at CURB.

Family seining programs that allow everyone to don waders and walk right into the Hudson River to catch and release hundreds of fish and other river critters will take place on April 26, May 17, June 14, July 12, August 16, and September 6 and 20 from 1-3 p.m.

Hands-on nature programs for children aged 5-12 will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on April 19, May 3, May 31, June 28, July 19, August 30, October 4, October 25, November 1 and November 8.

“Fish Tales,” programs for the youngest age group, 3-5, allow kids to discover nature through books and the river, and will take place May 17, June 14, July 12, August 2, September 20, and November 1 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The free programs are made possible through the support of The Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation. “We are very happy to be able to support programs that offer free experiential educational programs to families in our local community, and wish CURB staff the best of luck”, added Peter Smith, president of the Foundation.
