Director named to Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River
Sarah Lawrence College has announced the appointment of Ryan Palmer as Director of the Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak. In May the College entered into an alliance with the Hudson River Valley Environmental Education Institute, which has operated the Beczak Environmental Education Center on the banks of the Hudson River in downtown Yonkers. The collaboration enables the College to establish a research field station and facilitate faculty and student research while continuing environmental education programming about the river for school and community groups.
In making the announcement, college President Karen Lawrence praised Palmer as an experienced professional in Hudson River environmental planning, policy, and education. He has had a long affiliation with Clearwater, most recently as director of the organization’s Green Cities Initiative. “In a search in which we considered several highly qualified candidates, Ryan stood out for his knowledge of ecology, the geographic region, the community of environmental organizations, and his commitment to the Hudson River, watershed protection, education, and urban community outreach,” said Lawrence.
Plans for the Center include student and faculty research in Ecology and Environmental Studies, and academic work in multiple fields in the downtown Yonkers location. Sarah Lawrence students will also intern as instructors of environmental science on site for K-12 students, providing support for the existing education programs staff, explained Dean of the College Jerrilynn Dodds. “And, we are looking forward to participating in the large family of Hudson River organizations, advocating for the river, for its communities, and the environment,” she said.
The Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak was made possible by a seed grant from college Trustee Vicki Ford and her husband Silas of Bronxville.
Palmer’s appointment at the SLC Center for the Urban River at Beczak begins on August 19.
