A Conversation with Laura Bickford ’84

Heimbold Visual Arts Center Donnelley Film Theatre
      -
Interview with Laura Bickford ’84Laura Bickford is the Academy Award-nominated producer of the critically acclaimed film "Traffic," which was her first collaboration with Steven Soderbergh and Benicio Del Toro. The film earned four out of five Oscars for which it was nominated. One of the film industry's leading producers, Bickford collaborated again with Soderbergh and Del Toro, producing the two part epic, "Che," which garnered international acclaim winning the Palme D'or at Cannes for Best Actor and The Spanish Academy Goya Award for Benicio Del Toro in his role as Che Guevara. Laura Bickford Productions was based at Universal Studios for two years following "Traffic" where, among other projects, she developed "Duplicity" with Tony Gilroy, starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. Laura Bickford Productions merged with River Road Entertainment for two years during which time they financed the multi-award winning film "Brokeback Mountain," "Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus," starring Nicole Kidman, and Robert Altman's last film "A Prairie Home Companion" with Meryl Streep heading a stellar cast that included Lily Tomlin, Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, Virginia Madsen, Lindsey Lohan, and John C. Reilly. She also served as executive producer on "Chicago 10," a documentary by Brett Morgen and Graydon Carter.

The Invisible Bridge The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan

Titsworth Marjorie Leff Miller ’53 Lecture Hall
      -

Rick Perlstein discusses The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan

From the bestselling author of Nixonland: a dazzling portrait of America on the verge of a nervous breakdown in the tumultuous political and economic times of the 1970s. In January of 1973 Richard Nixon announced the end of the Vietnam War and prepared for a triumphant second term—until televised Watergate hearings revealed his White House as little better than a mafia den. The next president declared upon Nixon’s resignation "our long national nightmare is over"—but then congressional investigators exposed the CIA for assassinating foreign leaders. The collapse of the South Vietnamese government rendered moot the sacrifice of some 58,000 American lives. The economy was in tatters. And as Americans began thinking about their nation in a new way—as one more nation among nations, no more providential than any other—the pundits declared that from now on successful politicians would be the ones who honored this chastened new national mood. Ronald Reagan never got the message. Reagan was inventing the new conservative political culture we know now, in which a vision of patriotism rooted in a sense of American limits was derailed in America’s Bicentennial year by the rise of the smiling politician from Hollywood. Against a backdrop of melodramas from the Arab oil embargo to Patty Hearst to the near-bankruptcy of America’s greatest city, Rick Perlstein asks the question: what does it mean to believe in America? To wave a flag—or to reject the glibness of the flag wavers?

Attention students! Alumni are coming back to campus and they want to hang out with you! On Saturday October 18, you’re invited to join alumni on campus for a fun day of SLC activity including Brunch at Bates, a seminar with Neil Arditi, and cheering on the women’s volleyball team at the Campbell Sports Center. To register for this event please go to https://alum.slc.edu/a-day-at-slc

    Here’s the schedule:

Alumni and Students Connect on Campus Saturday, October 18th

11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Brunch Join alumni at Bates for a scrumptious brunch to start the day.

1:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Tricky and Terrifying Frost Neil Arditi, Literature Faculty Slonim Stone Room

In 1959, at a celebration of Robert Frost’s 85th birthday, the critic Lionel Trilling created a literary scandal by calling Frost “a terrifying poet.”  We will be using Trilling’s remarks as a springboard in our discussion of a handful of poems that demonstrate the surprising range of Frost’s genius.

4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Cheer on SLC at the Campbell Sports Center! Show alumni our SLC spirit as we all cheer on the Women’s Volleyball team as they take on Mount Saint Mary’s!
