In a special commentary on CNN.com titled “What Salinger tells us about caring for veterans,” Literature faculty member Nicolaus Mills highlights lessons that can be learned from J.D. Salinger and, in particular, his 1950 short story For Esme—With Love and Squalor. Mills states that in the story, Salinger, himself a World War II veteran who struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder, “gives an account of PTSD that speaks directly to us today.”
