ARCHIVED: Winter Health Fair: Kick the Winter Blues
College lifestyle can be conducive to detrimental sleep habits. Accepted as a cultural norm of college, students are frequently unaware that their aliments can be attributed to the harmful effects of poor sleeping. Health Services at Sarah Lawrence College will address this common problem on Monday, January 27 at 8:30 p.m with a fun filled approach to delivering the facts. "The Politics of Sleep, A Pajama Party," hosted by President Michele Myers at her house, will be complete with cookies and milk and bedtime stories, and will include a group discussion directed at deconstructing this cultural norm through an understanding of poor sleep habits, aspects of the college environment that contribute to poor sleep and solutions for bridging the all-too-common gap between college life and healthy sleep. There will also be a workshop teaching relaxation activities and other suggestions to help establish healthy sleep habits.
The event is part of a week-long Winter Health Fair, focusing on educating and enlightening the college community on little known subjects of healthy lifestyles. On Tuesday, January 28 at 12 p.m. a second event, "Seasonal Affective Disorder Light Display," will address the issue of light deprivation during winter months, a problem that can lead to symptoms of depression. A presentation on how people can suffer from lack of sunlight, even without being diagnosed with the disorder, and tactics on dealing with it will include a demonstration of special therapeutic lights that can alleviate the symptoms with controlled, artificial sunlight.
Other events in the Winter Health Fair include a lecture and discussion by biology faculty member Leah Olson on the effects of alcohol on the brain (Wednesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.); "Stress Busting" mini-massages offered by Health Services from 1–3 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, an evening of comedy to encourage laughter (Thursday, January 30 8:30 p.m.) and just a good night out featuring Funk & Blues Band -2 and Skinny J's Photo Booth (8:30 p.m. Friday, January 31).
