Carbon at Home in ECC
Last fall, Lorayne Carbon was a newbie at the SLC Early Childhood Center—but she got an office, not a cubbie: Carbon is the new director of the Early Childhood Center (ECC), following the retirement in 2003 of Sara Wilford ’72. (Wilford remains as director of the Art of Teaching graduate program, and as a member of the faculty advisory committee of the Child Development Institute.)
“Coming to the ECC was like finding my way home,” Carbon says. “The incredible faculty, the welcoming of the children’s families and the warmth of the SLC community have made my new position a dream.”
Carbon came to the College from the Virginia Marx Children’s Center in Valhalla, NY, where she was education coordinator. Previously, she was executive director of the Oak Lane Child Care Center in Chappaqua. An experienced teacher, she also taught a child development curriculum for nine years at Westchester Community College. She holds an undergraduate degree in psychology from SUNY Buffalo and a MS Ed. from Bank Street College of Education in New York City.
Carbon says that she plans to “continue the traditions of the ECC,” while taking on some new projects. A major goal for the coming year “is to create more opportunities for communication within our local community,” she adds.
