Not all student honors are supporting study abroad. Jessy Beckett '06 received a Morris K. Udall Scholarship for 2005-06, recognizing her work on behalf of environmental causes. She runs Progressive Produce, an SLC organization whose goal is "to get local and organic foods into the campus system"; it is currently coordinating sustainability campaigns with other Northeastern schools. She also volunteers with Empty Bellies (also known as Feeding Bellies), which collects unused food for a Bronx soup kitchen (see Sarah Lawrence, spring 2005). Last fall the Northern California native studied sustainable development in Costa Rica, co-authoring a report there on the harvesting of rare trees whose fruit was destined for expensive restaurants.
