A Message from Stephanie Cooper '65, MFA '76, Your Alumnae/i Board President
Among colleges, Sarah Lawrence is very young in years but has always had an "old soul": tremendous wisdom in its core educational and human values. Chief among them has been a commitment to individualism and to the individual. In the '60's, my own era, individualism took the form of an aversion to "joining"-to becoming part of or being defined by-any group. We thought of ourselves as free and unique spirits, never to be pigeonholed, never to join mindlessly in any organization or activity. I believe that this orientation was one of the College's many significant gifts to us, that it has served us well and that, as a result, we have served the world well.
As President of the Alumnae/i Association, I want to welcome every individualistic one of us back to this community we share and to remind us of our great power to sustain Sarah Lawrence in a world where its values are increasingly uncommon.
Please join me in expressing your understanding of how rare the gift of our education has been in our lives by giving back: contributing whatever you can afford, serving on committees and participating in SLC events in your communities. Let us come of age as alumnae/i by doing our part to preserve our rich heritage.
Rare individuals all, please join me in putting your money where your very well-developed powers of articulation have been ever since you graduated!
