Take it Outside

On a fall day long ago, Ray Clarke and his marine biology students carried the chalkboard outside to take advantage of one of the last warm days of the year. Clarke still likes to teach outdoors occasionally, he says, but these days it's harder to do: class discussions, like many aspects of our lives, depend more on technology than they used to. Nevertheless, when the weather's right and the topic appropriate, he leads his class to the hill behind Titsworth, which is shady and free of distracting passers-by, and leads a lively conversation about science while surrounded by nature.
