Gardening was my work-study job when I was a student, back when Alice Ilchman was here. I became obsessed with it, and eventually started my own landscaping business. We do all the gardening at Sarah Lawrence, as well as design and maintenance for residential clients. My favorite thing about the job is that every day is different, and the work changes from season to season. When I design I like to do a lot with color, like putting purple and chartreuse plants together. But the site really dictates what the planting should be. What might be fun for an outrageous summer garden isn’t the same thing you’d put in the woods. You have to let the site tell you what’s appropriate.
