Reunion 2007 - More Reasons You Came

For me it’s nice to come back and think: ‘What would you do differently if you could do it over again?’ And it’s stimulating to sit in the classroom again. Yesterday I sat in on an architectural seminar, and that’s not something I think about in my normal day. And then there are the interactions. Last night at the table there was a Hollywood agent and her husband, and it was fascinating to listen to their stories. It’s very different from what geneticists talk about at dinner.

I wanted to honor Michele Myers’s retirement. I feel that she brought something very important to the College, a very realistic note about the fact that we needed money, and that the reason we needed to talk about money was so we could have everything that money couldn’t buy. I do honor her presence and think it was essential for the College. She paid a lot of attention to what we needed to do here in a very practical way.

Before I came to Sarah Lawrence, I was a student at the Sorbonne. At the Sorbonne you went into an amphitheatre. When the professor came in you stood. He waved for you to sit down. You sat. He lectured. You took notes. And at the end you stood, applauded, and then the professor left. That was in the old days. Things changed, you know, after 1968. But for me, the kind of education that I could get here was a revelation, and coming back reminded me of how it changed me.
