A Message from Stephanie Cooper ’65, MFA ’76, Your Alumnae/i Board President
On behalf of the Alumnae/i Association, I am so pleased to welcome our new president, Karen Lawrence, to the College. From the outset of our acquaintance she has not only expressed interest in the Association, but also responded immediately to my requests that she meet with members of the Alumnae/i Board and become familiar with our workings. We welcome and value highly her support and her interest.
Lawrence’s involvement with the Alumnae/i Board has been especially valuable during our current, self-imposed self-examination and redefinition. Just after the close of the academic year we held a retreat on campus to reflect upon our priorities and to redefine our mission and our responsibilities. Our goal is to become more effective as a rallying organization among alumnae/i in order to support and sustain this unique institution and to serve the needs of our alumnae/i population.
I know from my service on the committee to select a new president that Lawrence was a remarkable community builder at U. C. Irvine, where she not only strengthened the institution from within, but also deepened its ties to the surrounding community. Her appreciation of the need for a strong community and of the power of community to build a great institution was evident from the first moment we met. I look forward to her inaugural year with happy anticipation and excitement. May this year bring invigoration, innovation, strength, and vibrancy to Sarah Lawrence College, through Karen’s leadership and with the commitment and support of the entire alumnae/i community!
