Opening day at Sarah Lawrence, August 2002. More than 300 first-year and transfer students arrive, register and move in. At some point during the day they all say good-bye to their families—and to the familiar. Amid boxes, registration forms, suitcases, plastic bags, roommates, hope and trepidation, the only common gesture is the embrace which brings child and family together for one last time.
