Off-Campus Access to Databases

To access databases from off-campus - click on the link for the database that you would like to search. If you are off-campus the SLC logon screen will appear. Enter your SLC network username and password. You only have to enter your username and password once each session, even if you want to search multiple databases.

Each database knows the IP addresses of the college. In order to be able to search databases from off-campus we use an Ezproxy server, the server 'tricks' the database into thinking the off-campus computer is actually on campus (of course you need to log-in for it to do this).

Troubleshooting

Things that can go wrong with access for off-campus database users.

  • Wrong username/password
  • Ezproxy server down
  • Database server down
  • Users computer configuration will not allow access.

1/ Is your password correct? (Can you log into the SLC network when on campus?)

If you don't know your password (or username) you need to visit Academic Computing, which is located in the basement of the library (passwords are not given out over the phone).

2/ What database are you trying to access? If you try to access another database does the same thing happen? (If a page pops up that reads 'you don't have access to this database' then it is a password problem - see No. 1).

3/ What is the error message that you receive? - Is it Page cannot be Displayed?

If it is Page cannot be displayed than it is either the Ezproxy server is down, the database server is down, or the users computer will not allow access. Contact the Reference Office at (914) 395-2225 or Click Here so we are aware of the problem.

If you cannot get into any databases then it is the Ezproxy server - If you can access other databases than it is the particular database. Contact the Reference Office.

4/ Also, it could be the 'users computer will not allow access' (if all of the above are working).

If this is the case you need to contact the manufacturer of your computer or manufacturer of the particular software that is causing the problem for a solution.
