Filing Your Federal Tax Returns
In the last section of this document, Resources for Tax Information and Support, there are several options for on-line filing listed, or you can file manually, and mail your tax return in to the IRS.
US (Federal) tax returns for non-resident aliens should be sent to:
Internal Revenue Service CenterPhiladelphia, PA 19255
If you were filing as a non-resident alien, you would normally be required to file:
Form 8843: For all international students/scholars/researchers and dependents, to indicate IRS-defined non-resident status,
And
Form 1040NR-EZ: For all international students/scholars/researchers who, in the pertinent tax years –
- Did not claim any dependents
- Cannot be claimed as a dependent on another person’s US tax return
- Had only US source income from wages, salaries, tips, taxable refunds of state and local taxes, scholarships or fellowships, and non-taxable interest, as described above.
- Had less than $50,000 in US-based taxable income (Form 1040NR-EZ, line 14, is less than $50,000)
- Claimed only the following adjustments to income:
-
- A) Student loan interest deduction (Form 1040NR-EZ, line 8), or
- B) Exclusion to scholarship and fellowship deduction (Form 1040NR-EZ, line 9)
- Did not claim any tax credits
- If married, and a resident of Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, a US national (US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or the Northern Marianas Islands), or a student from India, and did not claim exemption for spouse
- Claimed as their only itemized deduction, state and local income taxes
Or
Form 1040NR: For those who cannot file Form 1040NR-EZ
Remember to keep a file of photocopies of every form, letter, or supporting document(s) that you send in with your tax return. It is also important to retain information on all income receipts, canceled checks, bank statements, W-2 Forms, etc.
File your state and local taxes
You are also responsible for filing tax returns in the state and city where you reside. Please note that non-resident aliens, living in New York State and New York City, must file a Form IT-203 and IT-203-ATT, Schedule B. If you live in another city, in New York State, you may need to file there as well. The information you use for these forms should be consistent with the information used on your federal tax forms.
