Summer Arts in Berlin, Germany
Designed for those with an interest in the Contemporary Arts, students will explore Berlin's well earned reputation as the city for the Arts. Not only will you learn more about Berlin's history through literature, dance, art and architecture, you will also attend documenta13, one of the leading exhibitions of contemporary and modern art in the world.
Translation in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Much of the world's literature is not written in English. In order for us to read the best of what the rest of the world writes—and in order for the rest of the world to experience our best literature—skilled writers must work in the art of translation. This program is based in Buenos Aires, the home of Jorge Luis Borges, who so provocatively addressed translation in his lifetime. You will learn about the art of translation from some leading contemporary writers in Argentina and by working in intensive writing workshops.
The Geography of Faith: Paul and the Emergence of Christianity in the Aegean
Sarah Lawrence faculty member Cameron Afzal will introduce students to the Greco-Roman world and the impact of the Apostle Paul’s work in major urban centers of the Eastern Mediterranean. The class will focus on religion and life in the ancient Greek city with a view to understanding how Christianity took root and grew in these cities; as such, students will be introduced to the Pauline Epistles and the social world implied therein. This will be accomplished with a combination of seminar work in the classroom and site visits to the major ancient sites where Paul lived and worked.
