Unpaid Leaves for Staff

In addition to unpaid leaves in accordance with the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, unpaid leaves of absence may be granted for other important personal reasons with the approval of the staff member's Department Head and the appropriate reporting officer (the individual to whom the Department Head reports.) Such leaves may be granted only after three months of service. Insurance coverage during such unpaid leave of absence varies with each insurance plan. A staff member who plans to take an unpaid leave should meet with the Benefits Counselor as soon as the leave has been approved to discuss any limitations on coverage. Since the College's contribution to the Retirement Plan is based on earnings, this contribution will cease during unpaid leaves.

During an unpaid leave, other than those in accordance with the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, length of service credit, vacation days, personal days and sick/family days will not be earned. In addition, a staff member on such an unpaid leave of over two months is not eligible for the College's educational benefits during this period; therefore employees on such unpaid leaves of up to two months are eligible for the College’s educational benefits during this period.

Unpaid Leaves for Faculty

Faculty may take unpaid leaves of absence only in accordance with the faculty by-laws.

Faculty who take a one-semester leave of absence without pay may remain on all non-salary dependent benefits as if they were still actively working.

Faculty who take two consecutive semester of leave of absence without pay may remain on the health, life and disability insurance plans at their own expense, but may not remain on the educational benefits during this period.

Since the College's contribution to the Retirement Plan is based on earnings, this contribution will cease during any unpaid leave.
