Alcohol and Other Drug Education
As part of the College’s Alcohol and Other Drug policy all incoming students are required to complete the Alcohol-Wise education course, the aim of which is to provide students with a core knowledge regarding alcohol, alcohol use and the impact it can have on the individual and the campus community.
Sarah Lawrence College regards the illegal use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs as problems that affect our community. It is important that students, faculty, and staff be aware of the College’s Alcohol and Other Drug Policy which can be found at: Student-Handbook: Alcohol and Other Drug Policies.
In addition, New York State laws and City of Yonkers ordinances can be found at: Student-Handbook: Drugs and Alcohol Penal Law.
The College does accord those of legal age (21) the privilege to drink alcohol responsibly on campus following the aforementioned guidelines.
Resources
Health Services staff members have extensive experience in drug and alcohol counseling and are available on campus to meet with students or concerned friends or faculty. Appointments may be scheduled by calling x2350.
In addition to individual counseling at Health Services, the following on-campus resources are available to those who would like help with substance use issues:
Harm Reduction Group
Contact: Stephen Gadischkie, LCSW, x.2350
Harm Reduction is defined as reducing any damage caused by alcohol or other drug (AOD) use to the user, the user’s friends, the user’s family, and the user’s community. For some students, the healthiest relationship with alcohol and other drugs is not to use them at all. For others, it means avoiding or reducing harm by setting limits and making educated and safer choices in the way they use their drug of choice.
Recovery Group
Contact: Stephen Gadischkie, LCSW, x.2350
The Recovery Group provides an abstinence-based treatment model of recovery. Students who have some time in sobriety will continue to support each other and increase their skills relevant to avoiding substance use.
