Dear Incoming Student,

On behalf of the staff of Sarah Lawrence College Health Services, I would like to extend to you a warm welcome to Sarah Lawrence College.

As part of the College's Alcohol and Other Drug policy, all incoming students are required to complete the Alcohol-Wise education course, the aim of which is to provide students with a core knowledge regarding alcohol, alcohol use, and the impact it can have on the individual and the campus community.

Alcohol-Wise is a Web-based alcohol education program designed to assist students in making healthy decisions regarding alcohol use in college. The program takes one to two hours to complete and includes information on: 

• how expectations influence behavior
• alcohol's effect on learning and memory
• recognizing and responding to an alcohol-related emergency
• blood alcohol concentration and low-risk drinking strategies

Based on students' responses to a confidential questionnaire at the beginning of the program, Alcohol-Wise provides personalized information based on gender and drinking behavior. Alcohol-Wise is relevant to students who drink and those who abstain from alcohol.

Students can access Alcohol-Wise using any computer with internet and audio capabilities. You will receive an e-mail from 3rd Millennium Classrooms with detailed access instructions for Alcohol-Wise the week of June 15, 2008. Completion of Alcohol-Wise is required by July 15, 2008.

Failure to do so will result in your inability to register for classes.

During the week of September 1, 2008, you will receive a second e-mail from 3rd Millennium Classrooms, directing you to complete the mandatory follow-up portion of the Alcohol-Wise course. It is imperative that you complete the follow-up course prior to the alcohol education program led by your RA during the month of September, as this information will be an integral part of that education program.
