Publishing

Each spring, faculty meet with students in each genre to discuss the nuts and bolts of publishing. These question-and-answer sessions are dictated in large part by student interest and can range over topics from the issue of simultaneous submission, to grants and fellowships, to the contemporary state of the genre at hand.

Other programs are developed annually to address areas related to publishing. The Writing Program has sponsored events in conjunction with the National Book Critics Circle, in which book critics from major publications examined the state of contemporary criticism. We also have workshops with editors and representatives from large and small presses.

Every year, the program updates its library of writing reference books, including directories of small presses, new editions of the Writer's Market and directories of grants and fellowships. Currently, a graduate assistant researches the availability of grants, fellowships, contents and other publishing opportunities for students, and then makes this information available to graduate students.
