A joint degree in Women’s History and Law is offered in cooperation with Pace University Law School. Students in this program earn both a Master of Arts and a Juris Doctor. By taking courses that count toward both degrees, students in the joint program can earn the M.A. and the J.D. in four years of full-time study. This program may also be completed on a part-time basis. If you are interested in the joint degree program, you must apply separately to each school. Once admitted to both, you qualify for the joint degree. Requirements for the two degrees include a total of 120 credits, 20 of which are applicable to both programs. Each school accepts up to 10 credits from the other school to satisfy requirements.
Program Details
Full-time students can earn both degrees in four years (instead of five). Part-time students are also welcome. The joint degree program requires a total of 120 credits, 20 of which are applicable to both programs.
Program Benefits
Upgraded career possibilities. Many people hold law degrees, but few also have a graduate degree in women’s history from a highly prestigious institution. The combination will open many doors. Increased impact in advocacy. The two degrees empower graduates to advocate for women from a position of greater authority. Enhanced capacity for critical thinking and intellectual work. Some people find that a legal education is too narrowly focused. By training their minds in two disciplines—law and history—graduates of the joint degree program greatly enhance their ability to think and write. Increased knowledge of women’s issues and history. Few law school courses focus on women’s issues and even fewer focus on history. This background broadens the context for both thought and action. The Sarah Lawrence experience. Sarah Lawrence is well known for its unique approach to teaching. Students flourish in our challenging environment of small seminars, independent study and one-on-one mentoring.
