The Advocacy & Genetics: Arenas of Engagement conference is co-sponsored by the Health Advocacy Program, the Human Genetics Program and the Health, Science and Society Faculty Group.
Health Advocacy Program
The Health Advocacy Program of Sarah Lawrence College, founded in 1980, is the only master’s degree program designed to educate professional advocates in the health care field.Graduates advance the interests of patients, families and health consumers in diverse arenas, including hospitals, research settings, policy and legislative arenas, non-profit organizations and government agencies. The interdisciplinary, seminar-based graduate program provides a social science and humanities–based curriculum that is flexible enough to encompass this fast-changing field.Students are strongly encouraged to follow their own interests in designing research projects and are advised to use their three required internships to explore advocacy in different arenas.
Human Genetics Program
Founded in 1969, the Human Genetics Program at Sarah Lawrence was the nation’s first, and remains the largest program of its kind. Sarah Lawrence has trained about half of the world’s genetic counselors and among our graduates are the directors of more than a third of the genetic counseling master’s programs in the United States and Canada. This master’s program prepares students for board certification as genetic counselors and qualifies them for careers in the public and private sectors.
Health, Science and Society
Health, Science and Society is a focus of study available to undergraduates at Sarah Lawrence. It was created to reflect the expanding range of political, social and international concerns in health studies. Program offerings include undergraduate as well as selected graduate-level courses from the graduate programs in Human Genetics and in Health Advocacy.
