Physical Education and Athletics
The Department of Physical Education and Athletics offers a wide variety of activities and classes. Graduate students are encouraged to participate in all of our programs.
Campbell Sports Center
This 48,000 square foot facility includes a pool, gymnasium, jogging track, fitness center, studio, rowing tank, three squash courts and two student lounges. Department offices are also located in the Campbell Sports Center. You must have a valid Sarah Lawrence College I.D. in order to enter the facility. Please refer to the Physical Education and Athletics site for hours of operation and other pertinent information.
Caspar Whitney Fitness Center
In order to use the Fitness Center, students must have the required medical clearance form on file, complete a Health History form at the front desk and then sign up for the required fitness center orientation. The orientation is a 45-minute session with a fitness trainer to familiarize participants with the safe and effective use of all fitness center equipment.
Pool
The 6 lane, 25 yard pool is open several times a day for recreational use. Please check the posted schedule for current hours.
Equipment
Towels and sports equipment can be checked out (with a valid SLC I.D.) on the lower level of the Campbell Sports Center. Students are responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged equipment checked out in their name.
Lockers
Lockers in the Locker Rooms are for daily use only. Locks are available at the Equipment Cage. Personal belongings may not be left overnight. Lockers in the Day Student Lounge are available on a semester basis for day students only. Register for a Day Student locker at the Front Desk of the Campbell Sports Center.
Physical Education Classes
We divide the academic year into six-week blocks called QUARTERS. Each quarter we offer approximately 25 different activity classes. Class schedules will be sent to all students via campus email. Class offerings are also listed on our web page. Graduate students may register for any of our activity classes—there is no cost for most classes. You must register for classes in person at the Campbell Sports Center.
NOTE: The first two days of the registration week are reserved for undergraduates because they need to fulfill the Physical Education requirement.
Outdoor Facilities
- The tennis courts are located behind Andrews and are available for student use.
- There is an outdoor volleyball court on Sampson Field (the area between the PAC and the New Dorms)
- Marshall Field is available for use by student groups; time must be reserved in advance through the Department of Physical Education and Athletics.
Athletics
The College sponsors intercollegiate teams in Women's Swimming, Softball and Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, Men's Tennis and Women's Tennis, Men's and Women's Crew, Cross Country, Men's Soccer, and Equestrian (co-ed). Graduate students are invited to participate on any of these teams. Our teams welcome students of all ability levels provided they attend the required practices. Many graduate students have found participation on our teams to be both manageable and enjoyable. To find out more about our athletic program please come to our information meeting during Orientation week.
