Shaping the Novel
This workshop is for those students who hope to undertake writing a novel. It will involve a good deal of reading and discussion of possible structures and strategies for a novel. The reading part of the workshop will focus on reading and breaking down form and character development in the novel. The writing begins at the beginning—time spent exploring possible entry points into a novel, moving around in voice, character, point of view, and image patterning. Students will try multiple opening chapters. In fact, there will be a good deal of trying and retrying, considering and reconsidering character, plot, tone, and sentence making.
