SLC Student Philanthropy

The PHIL Project is a student-run committee focused on philanthropy for students from students. Working with the integrity and creativity of the Sarah Lawrence student body, the goal is to reach out to the college campus and its members for support, inspiring an excitement for student fundraising while simultaneously providing the students with valuable opportunities to learn about philanthropy and the world of nonprofit. In the winter of 2011, Sarah Lawrence seniors Laurel Dammann ‘12, Katherine Steward ‘12, and Therese Reksnes ‘12 worked with The Fund for Sarah Lawrence to launch The PHIL Project.

Education and Awareness

To educate and inform the student body in February 2012 the committee led an educational session where they spoke to their peers about how gifts of all kinds benefit all students and the school. They spoke about the different costs of running and operating a college campus and investing in SLC’s future through scholarship support and gifts to the endowment.

Show your SLC love...make a film

The committee debuted the first Sarah Lawrence Moving Picture Show, an initiative to spread awareness of Sarah Lawrence and philanthropy, utilizing something at which SLC students excel—creative thinking. Students were invited to submit short films, one to three minutes in length, based on why they love SLC and why they and alums should give back. Three awards were presented along with cash prizes. The categories were “Best Picture Award,” the “Vision Award,” and the “Artist Award.” The “Best Picture” film was screened at the annual Sarah Lawrence Film Festival in April in Bronxville, NY. The winning videos were sent to college constituents in conjunction with fundraising appeals from The Fund for Sarah Lawrence and are available for viewing on the College’s website.
