SLC Student Philanthropy
The PHIL Project is a student-run committee focused on philanthropy for students from students. The goal is to work with the ingenuity and creativity of the Sarah Lawrence student body, inspiring an excitement for student fundraising while simultaneously providing valuable opportunities to learn about philanthropy and the nonprofit world.
The PHIL Project offers fun philanthropic events and competitions for the SLC community. Below are some of the highlights from the 2012-2013 academic year.
Thank-A-Donor Week: Students Say Thank You
During Thank-A-Donor Week (fall), more than 300 students volunteered to write thank you notes to our amazing parent and alumni donors. The notes were moving and heartfelt. A sampling of their expressions of gratitude are found here.
“Thank you so much for all the love and support you give to our school. Education is priceless and I’m so appreciative to be able to attend the wonderful institution of SLC. As a senior studying dance, philosophy, literature and environmental studies, I can honestly say that attending SLC has changed my life and my perspective for the better. Thank you for making this possible. Love, Sara”
“Because of your generous donations, I am going to be able to do fieldwork at a school for kids with special needs. This means so much to me and it wouldn’t be possible without you! Please continue to donate so more students can fulfill their dreams and make a difference! –Maddie”
“Thank you for making it possible for a place like this to exist. As a student on financial aid, I am especially thankful to you, and to all those who support something so rare as Sarah Lawrence. I am a triplet and both of my sisters are in college—without donations and generosity of others, I would not be able to pursue the education I want to and currently am. Again, thank you! Sincerely, Joshua”
Student Philanthropy Day: February 28, 2013
The PHIL Project teamed up with the 2013 Senior Class Gift committee to celebrate Student Philanthropy Day (winter). Tabling around campus committee members asked passerby’s to stop and learn about the fundraising efforts at SLC and to show their appreciation to the college by making a contribution to annual fund. Our piggybanks were filled that day thanks to all of our fabulous student, faculty and staff donors! In addition to tabling, the committee hung price tags around campus illustrating the different costs of running and operating a college and how all benefit from the generosity of others.
Moving Picture Show: Philanthropy Film Competition
The PHIL Project hosted its second annual Sarah Lawrence Moving Picture Show (spring). This initiative spreads awareness of Sarah Lawrence and philanthropy and utilizes something at which SLC students excel—creative thinking. Students were invited to submit short films, one to three minutes in length, based on why they love SLC and why they and alums should give back. Three awards Best Picture, Vision and Artist were presented along with cash prizes. All three films were screened at the annual Sarah Lawrence Film Festival in April in Bronxville, NY. The winning videos were sent to the college’s constituents in conjunction with fundraising appeals from The Fund for Sarah Lawrence and are available for viewing on the College’s website. Check out the winners here.

"Generosity is what enables students to innovate, create, and follow those passions that will transform our society for the better. Sarah Lawrence students stand out in this regard -- they are the creators. They will benefit the most and do the most with this generosity."
