Sixth Annual Genetic Counseling Career Day
The Sixth Annual Genetic Counseling Career Day, held on June 2, 2014, was a great success!
The Joan H. Marks Graduate Program in Human Genetics hosted 40 prospective students interested in learning more about the field of genetic counseling. Most were undergraduates from the Northeast region. Leslie Hunt, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, kicked off the day with some words of welcome followed by Anne Greb, the new Program Director, who took us through a brief history of the genetic counseling profession and its growing importance in the health care arena. Next, several members of the program's faculty, who are also practicing genetic counselors, conducted a panel sharing their own journey as well as highlighting the different career trajectories for genetic counselors. Throughout the remainder of the day, participants had the opportunity to interact in small groups with genetic counselors who work in various specialty areas of the profession. Current and former students joined us for lunch, providing their perspectives about "what it is really like" in graduate school. The day wrapped up with a Q&A about strategies for applying to genetic counseling programs.
We really enjoyed meeting everyone and promoting the genetic counseling profession and the Joan H. Marks Graduate Program in Human Genetics at Sarah Lawrence College. The feedback we received was very positive…but don't take our word for it! Here's what one participant had to say:
"I am a prospective applicant for Fall 2016, and I found that the day overall reaffirmed my desire to pursue a degree in Genetic Counseling, but also opened my mind up to so many potential avenues and questions that I had not previously been aware of. The opportunity to meet in small groups with counselors and professionals in a variety of fields was especially valuable, and I learned so much about the important role that genetic counselors have for patients and other professionals today."For more information on this program, please contact Christina Clohessy at (914) 395-2605 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
