Please join Prema Samuel, Director of International Programs, as she reviews how Sarah Lawrence seeks to incorporate the study abroad experience into students’ academic programs. Prema will also review financial aid and scholarship options. There will also be time to speak directly with students who have studied in different programs around the world.

Art Show and Silent Auction

Now in its fourth year, this totally student-driven effort showcases the artwork of current students. Coordinator, Joanna Harmonosky and her student committee make student fundraising a reality at this fun exhibition and sale. Proceeds from the event support the Fund for Sarah Lawrence. Stop by and take a peek-- you may discover a piece of student art that you simply cannot live without!

Participants will engage in exercises to find their comic voice and to understand the structures of natural comic behavior. Everyone will participate.

Nabokov reading Dostoevsky: Lolita’s debt to “Old Dusty"
Melissa Frazier, Russian Faculty
Nabokov famously dismissed Dostoevsky as “a much overrated, sentimental and gothic novelist of the time.” Under the cover of his criticism, however, he also lifted a great deal from “Old Dusty.” Join us for a discussion of Dostoevsky’s significant presence in Lolita.

What’s Wrong with the Electoral College Systems? Mathematical and Historical Perspectives
Dan King, Mathematics Faculty
The Electoral College System, the voting method used to determine the U.S. Presidency, is complicated, confusing, and, from a mathematical point of view, kind of crazy! Nevertheless, our government has perpetuated this electoral system since its nascent days of the Constitutional Convention. This presentation highlights the history and evolution of the Electoral College System, discusses its merits and faults using a game-theoretic analysis, and examines alternative voting schemes. No prior knowledge of Game Theory or the Electoral College System assumed.

Poetry Seminar
Jeffrey McDaniel, Writing Faculty
We will closely read and discuss a published poem by a contemporary author, keeping an eye and ear out for issues of craft, then, with the same focus and attention, we will read and critique a poem by a living, breathing Sarah Lawrence student.

The Chemistry of Global Warming
Mali Yin, Chemistry Faculty
The greenhouse effect, the molecular mechanism for global warming, and the increased human contributions to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that are the chief cause of the current concern about the enhanced greenhouse effect will be discussed.

Bright New Voices
Tent, South lawn in front of Westlands
Join Jeffrey McDaniel, Writing faculty, and students for a reading featuring the work of talented young non-fiction writers, each with a new critically acclaimed book. The event will be followed by a short moderated question and answer panel and book signing / reception. Featured artists include Ta-Nehisi Coates, author of The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and An Unlikely Road to Manhood, a memoir that deals with the author's youth on the rough streets of Baltimore, with a complicated, free-loving, disciplinarian Black Panther for a father. Time Out New York calls the book "a love story, dispatched from the front lines of a family". Award-winning poet, Sarah Manguso, is the author of The Two Kinds of Decay: A Memoir. She writes about the challenges of dealing with an extremely rare blood disease she developed in college. The New York Times has called the book "a remarkable, clear-eyed account that turns horror into something humane and beautiful.”
