Join us for a festive lunch under the tent on the Westlands lawn. There will be a tasty BBQ, good company, student musical performances by Vocal Minority, Treble in Paradise, and a student jazz ensemble, and a surprise guest appearance! Please present your meal ticket found in your registration packet for lunch. Students with meal plans please show your SLC ID to the cashier.

Now in its third year, this totally student-driven effort showcases the art work of current students. Organizer Drew Snyder ’08 and his student committee make student fundraising a reality at this fun exhibition and sale. Proceeds from the event support the Fund for Sarah Lawrence. Stop by and take a peek-- you may discover a piece of student art that you simply cannot live without!

In 1950, Alan Turing almost single-handedly established the field of artificial intelligence (A.I.). Many predicted that by the end of the 20th century electronic brains would rival their human counterparts. And yet, no computer has come close to passing the "Turing Test" for intelligence. We will discuss why A.I. has turned out to be so challenging and whether recent advances have finally paved the way for thinking machines.

Becoming a Fish out of Water: Methods of Media Analysis

The mass media profoundly shape everyday reality. Media images have become so pervasive that analyzing them requires questioning taken for granted ideas, assumptions, and social categories. In this seminar, we will learn about some of the tools that scholars have developed for analyzing these images and practice applying them to media products.

Join us for a multimedia presentation on parts of Sarah Lawrence’s history that you may not know. Learn about the bowling alley on campus and the weekend cabin available to students in the 1930s. Discover the history of the Hole-in-the-Fence and curfews at SLC! Hear what the Pub used to be and listen to Eleanor Roosevelt deliver the 1957 commencement speech. The presentation will be illustrated with historical photographs from the archives.

Women in the Black Revolt

This session focuses on the new history of women’s activism in the Chicago Black Renaissance and beyond. This is about the flowering of black culture on the Southside of Chicago in the 1940s and 1950s, including such artists and intellectuals as Katherine Dunham, Gwendolyn Brooks and Lorraine Hansberry. We will explore the ways active women shaped African American identity and culture and changed the terms for the black freedom struggle.
