Susan Carey Orkand

BA, University of California. MA, Goucher College. Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist (BC-DMT). More than 30 years of clinical and supervisory experience, including 18 years at Hackensack University Medical Center working with pediatric hematology/oncology and seven of which were in an integrative palliative care initiative in a pediatric intensive care unit of The David Center for Children’s Pain and Palliative Care. Earlier in her career, she worked at Trinitas Hospital for 10 years as a clinical specialist supervisor in child and adolescent psychiatry and, before that, developed a movement-based program for autistic children and their families. She recently returned to working with developmental disabilities as the Director of Recreational Therapy at Richmond Community Services in Yonkers. She has taught, led workshops and supervised throughout her career; published many articles and been a co-investigator on research in pediatric oncology; and co-authored the chapter, “Holistic Management of Symptoms,” in Palliative Care for Infants, Children and Adolescents: A Practical Handbook, edited by Carter, Levetown, and Friebert (Johns Hopkins University Press). A Certified Laban Movement Analyst (CMA) and a registered yoga teacher (E-RYT), she also serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Dance Therapy (2012-present). SLC, 2014–
