Sarah Lawrence College in Cuba
For more than 300 years, Cuba has defined Spanish culture in Central and South America. As one of a small group of students selected for the semester-long Sarah Lawrence program, you will learn firsthand how and why that culture has shaped—and reshaped—not only the regional but the international landscape. You will be immersed in the language and in the customs in ways that are meant to deepen your understanding and appreciation of a part of the world poised to take its place among North America’s fastest growing civilizations.
The Sarah Lawrence College in Cuba program is available to Sarah Lawrence students only, and the group is contained to fewer than 20 students to assure individual attention. Each student takes four courses for credit. Course work includes Spanish at an advanced level, one core seminar on Cuban society and development, and electives in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts
Contemporary Cuban society—a mix of innovative ideas, weathered facades, cosmopolitan consciousness, lavish beauty, persistent history, artistic sensitivity and genuine friendliness—surrounds students who spend a semester on the Sarah Lawrence
program in Cuba. Here, where a "life goes on" attitude prevails, students see resilience in the presence of hardship, resourcefulness in the face of scarcity, and a collective, forward-looking spirit amidst political and economic uncertainty. Here, students see Cuba for what it is—and learn how Cubans are shaping what it will be.
