Gain hands-on experience and instruction in all aspects of filmmaking focusing on four core elements: writing for the screen, directing, production, and post-production. Lectures feature hands-on camera work, augmented by special guest speakers and behind-the-scenes visits to Manhattan production studios and editing facilities. After you shoot three film exercises focused on different filmmaking techniques, you’re ready to write, direct, produce, shoot, and edit your own short video. You choose the format—narrative, documentary, or experimental. You may choose to stick to a script with actors, costumes, and a controlled set, or you may approach your shoot with the spirit of improvisation. The final product is your completed short—to which you own the exclusive rights—ready for your professional portfolio, graduate school application, or Web distribution. This program is also open to post-high school students.

Animation: From Stop Motion to Flash
July 8–July 28, 2012
Tuition: $2,450
Housing & Meal Plan: $1,800
This program will feature a one-day workshop with renowned animator Bill Plympton! Students will have the opportunity to cultivate their abilities in both the technical and conceptual aspects of animation. They will gain exposure to an array of digital and traditional mediums – including stop motion, cut-outs, rotoscoping, and Flash - while refining their abilities to design characters, develop and pitch a cohesive story, and translate ideas into animation. The first assignment will consist of a basic stop motion project, students will work on in small groups in order to familiarize the class with sequential spacing and timing. After this project’s completion, half of the course will be devoted to introducing Flash animation and technique. This period will primarily be spent getting a hands-on feel for digital drawing and colorizing, but may also include screenings of relevant pieces and brief lectures concerning animations executed in this manner. For the remainder of the class, students will work individually (or in small groups, if they prefer) to conceptualize and create a cohesive animated short. This process will consist of story and character development, writing and pitching a treatment, storyboarding, and executing their vision with the goal of presenting it at the end of the program. | Learn more»
